Are you all settled in at Camping La Blaquière, right by the water? Great choice. While our private beach is an invitation to relax, it would be a shame not to explore the trails surrounding us. Here, in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site, every path tells a story. Lace up your boots: our team is taking you on a tour of our 5 favorite trails, featuring breathtaking panoramas and magical rock formations.
1. Point Sublime: The Ultimate Postcard View
This is the absolute "must-do." If you only have time for one hike to truly "see" the Gorges du Tarn, this is the one. This trail leads you to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in France, overlooking the famous "Cingle" (the dramatic horseshoe bend) of the river.
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Duration: 3h15 | Distance: 12.5 km
- Elevation gain: +363 m
- Starting point: Church square in Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac.
💡 Insider Tip: On your way back, stop at the Maison de Tourisme et de Pays right by the parking lot. It’s the perfect place to grab some local cheese or honey from the Causses.
2. Les Arcs de Saint-Pierre: A Magical Family Adventure
This is a favorite for kids (and us too!). Located on the Causse Méjean plateau, it feels like a set from a fantasy movie. The path winds through giant natural stone arches sculpted by time. It’s playful, mostly shaded, and completely immersive.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Duration: 1h30 to 2h00 | Distance: Approx. 4 km
- Starting point: Parking lot past the hamlet of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers.
👨👩👧👦 Why kids love it: They can play explorer in the ruins of an ancient Gallo-Roman village and discover the mysterious "Dead Man’s Cave" (Grotte de l'Homme Mort). A natural playground at its best.
3. Baousse del Biel: Face-to-Face with Vultures
Still on the Causse Méjean, this loop follows the corniche cliffs directly overlooking the valley. It’s a "balcony" trail offering breathtaking and plunging views of the Tarn river below.
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Duration: 3h30 | Distance: 7.6 km
- Starting point: The hamlet of La Bourgarie.
🦅 The Highlight: You’re walking right at the level of the nesting sites. Griffon vultures use the thermal winds along the cliffs to glide, sometimes just a few meters away from you.
4. Le Cirque des Baumes: For the Active Hiker
Fair warning: this one is a climb! "Baumes" means "caves" in the local Occitan language, and this natural circus is a geological wonder. This hike takes you into the heart of a grandiose rock amphitheater.
- Difficulty: Very Hard
- Duration: 3h00 | Distance: 4.5 km
- Elevation gain: +564 m (steep incline)
🦇 The Reward: Exploring the troglodyte village of Baumes Basses and the Saint-Hilaire hermitage, both tucked directly into the cliffside. Experience the wild and mystical side of the Gorges.
5. La Caxe: Heritage and Adrenaline
Starting from the village of Les Vignes, just a stone's throw from the campsite, this technical trail connects the river to the plateau. A physical ascent that rewards every effort with a unique panorama of the valley.
- Difficulty: Very Hard
- Duration: 3h45 | Distance: 11.6 km
- Elevation gain: +668 m
🏞️ What to see: The typical "caussenarde" architecture of the La Caxe settlement and the Saint-Préjet Romanesque church—an 11th-century stone gem that seems to watch over the emerald waters of the Tarn.
Post-Hike Bliss at La Blaquière
There’s nothing like returning to the comfort of Camping La Blaquière after a day of exploring. Our hikers' favorite ritual? Kicking off the boots, walking across the smooth, polished pebbles of our private beach, and dipping your feet into the cool, crystal-clear water of the Tarn river. It’s nature’s best recovery therapy!
